Advertising Guidelines

In order to advertise with Everything Oil & Gas (EOG), your advertisements must comply with these Guidelines.  EOG reserves the right to modify these Guidelines at any time with notice to current advertisers.  The most recent version of the Guidelines will be posted on this page.  You agree to periodically review the Guidelines to ensure that your advertisements remain in compliance with them.

1. Identification of Company Name:

  • Either the ad creative or the landing page of the ad shall contain the name of the company, or some other obvious identifier of the company responsible for the content, so that the customer knows which organization either purchased the ad or is being advertised.
  • The banner ad must logically correspond with the landing page.  There cannot be an example of a bait and switch resolution.  Examples: the banner ad is for office supplies and the resolve is to an adult content page.

2. Customer Experience:

  • Creative submitted by or on behalf of an advertiser may not:
    • Utilize ‘mouse trapping’ whereby the advertiser does not allow customers to use their ‘back button’ and traps them on their site
    • Imitate presupposed knowledge about the functionality of your personal computer
    • Pretend to know details about a user’s computer/system, including what is/is not installed, whether it has discovered viruses, worms, corrupted files, etc. (i.e. scare tactics to make users buy/download software etc.)
    • Promote or contain viruses, worms, corrupted files, cracks or other material that is intended to or may damage or render inoperable software, hardware or security measures of EOG , or any third party.
    • Have a Pop-Up ad or a Pop-Under ad launched from within an ad or from the landing page whether real or imitated behavior
    • Perform an automatic download of anything to a customer’s or member’s system or present a download dialog box without first presenting detailed information to the customer or member about the download and then requiring the customer or member to click to download the product

3. Pop-up and Pop-under ads:

We will not accept pop-ups and pop-under ads anywhere on the website or as part of the destination/landing pages of ads.

4. Destination Sites/ Landing Pages that Ads Click Through To:

The page/site clicked through to from an ad must adhere to the policies herein on adult content and illegal activity both for advertising and editorial content.

The landing page clicked through to from an ad served through EOG’s  Banner Ads cannot:

    • Launch a pop-up and/or pop-under ad to a customer

5.Software Downloads including Freeware and Shareware

The following is not allowed:

    • Content that facilitates and/or promotes, whether directly or indirectly, the sale or use of software whose purpose is to collect demographic and usage information from a customer’s or member’s computer without their express consent (Note that the term Spyware is often used to describe this type of software and the information collected by such software is usually used for advertising purposes)
    • Content that facilitates and/or promotes, whether directly or indirectly, the sale or use of software that ‘sneaks’ onto a user’s system and performs activities hidden to the customer or user
    • Content that facilitates and/or promotes, whether directly or indirectly, the sale or use of software that are bundled as hidden components of other software whether free or for fee
    • Content that facilitates and/or promotes, whether directly or indirectly, the sale or use of software that in any way alter, harm, disable or replace any software installed on a customer’s or user’s computer without their express consent
    • Automatic downloads
    • Presentation of download dialog boxes without a customer’s or member’s express action (click) to perform a download

Advertisements that promote ‘legitimate’ software downloads must adhere to the following:

    • Clear notice to the customer about the download and the software such as the time it takes to download, complete and accurate information on what the software does and how to remove it
    • If the download process requires the customer to provide Personally Identifiable Information (PII), the following requirements apply:
      • Information on how the information collected is being used must be clearly presented
      • No information collected can be shared with a third party without an explicit opt-out
      • Advertisers must provide instructions within their privacy policy for how to opt out of any future unsolicited promotional communication – email or otherwise
      • Any follow-on communication from the advertiser resulting from the PII collected via advertisements must contain an explicit opt-out (this applies to every single piece of unsolicited promotional email

6. Lead Generation:

Any advertising that involves lead generation such as driving customers or members to sign up for online/offline direct marketing/offers must adhere to the following:

  • In lead generation marketing, each offer presented to users accessing an advertisement generated through EOG’s Banner Ads:
    • Clearly disclose the provider’s name
    • Include a separate and conspicuous opt-in specific to each provider offer
    • Provide an opt-out for promotional communication, including an opt-out for each follow-up promotional communication
    • Provide an obvious and direct link to the provider’s respective privacy policy
  • The advertiser must present the offer requirements and limitations in a clear, conspicuous manner prior to asking customers to provide any Personally Identifiable Information (PII). 
  • If a user chooses ‘no’ to any (or all) of the offers presented, the advertiser will not be given a second opportunity to remarket to that customers within the session
  • The offers presented as part of a single advertising experience must be of a ‘reasonable’ number (i.e. 5 separate pages with multiple offers does not constitute reasonable)

7. Adult Related Content:

EOG’s Banner Ads will not accept the following on any publisher, website accessible through an advertisement or advertisement:

  • Nudity – any images that reveal nipples, genitals, buttocks, butt cracks or excessive cleavage  (bathing suits are OK, unless they do not cover these body parts)
  • Sex scenes – images of people in positions or activities that are suggestive or sexual (i.e. sexually provocative touching, bondage)

8. WebCams / Surveillance Equipment:

Content or advertisements that facilitate and/or promote the sale of WebCams / Surveillance Equipment are allowed provided it is clearly promoting and/or suggesting only legitimate uses of such equipment. Non-legitimate use consists of any illegal surveillance, including but not limited to purposely spying on people whether for pleasure or any other reason

9. Other Offensive or Illegal Content:

Content or advertisements promoting politically and/or religious agendas and/or illegal activities, including but not limited to hate, criminal and/or terrorist activities is strictly prohibited.  

10. Intellectual Property Rights, Trademarks, Piracy, and/or Copyrights:

The infringement or misappropriation of EOG’s Banner Ads or any third party’s intellectual property rights, including but not limited to trade marks, trade names, designs, patents, copyright and personality is strictly prohibited.

11. Online Pharmacies

EOG’s Banner Ads will not accept advertising from uncertified pharmacies.

12. Gambling Content (i.e. fantasy sports, horse racing):

Under no circumstance is content that facilitates and/or promotes illegal gambling is allowed

13. Advertising/sites designed for Children:

Ads prompting for personally identifiable information (PII) are not permitted in advertisements/websites designed for or targeting children

14. Competitive Exclusions:

Certain of our member publishers have indicated that they prohibit competitive advertisements from appearing on their sites.  As such, certain advertisements will be rejected or removed either globally from the network or specifically from some of the publisher sites.

15. EOG’s Discretion

As operators of the Everything Oil & Gas network, EOG reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to reject or remove from the network any advertisement and/or publisher website.

16. Publisher Guidelines

Certain of our member publishers have guidelines specific to their sites.  As such, certain advertisements may be rejected or removed at the request of such publishers for failure to comply with their site specific advertising guidelines.
